Use of some prepositions with meaning
About (প্রায়/সম্পর্কে/বিষয়ে, বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়)
1. বিষয়েঃ
He has much knowledge about computer
He wrote a book about air pollution.
Tell me all about the accident.
2. সম্পর্কেঃ
He told me about the book.
There is something strange about him.
3. প্রায় বা কাছাকাছি অর্থে
It is about 10 p.m.
He was about twenty years old.
He is somewhere about the station.
4. এদিক/সেদিকঃ
He wandered about the town.
5. চারপাশেঃ
She put her arms about him.
He looked about the room curiously.

6. পেশা অর্থে
I know what his father is about.
He knows about your profession.
Above (উপরে)
1. একটা অন্যটার উপরে
The water rose above our knees.
The plane flies above the cloud.
The birds are flying above the trees.
2. সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ বা বয়সে বেশি হলে
He is about fifty.
3. পদবী, মর্যাদায় উপরে অর্থে
A professor is above a lecturer.
4. নাগালের বাইরে/উর্ধ্বে অর্থে
His honesty is above suspicion.
She is not above lying.
5. গুরুত্ব বা গুণগত মান বেশি অর্থে
A soldier values honour above life.
She values her chastity above life.
Across (আড়াআড়ি/বরাবর)
1. এক পাশ থেকে অন্যপাশে যাওয়া
The boat carried us across the river.
There is a bridge across the river.
2. এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া
There is a line across the page.
He walked across the road.
3. কোন কিছুর ওপারে/ওপাশে
Our house is across the street.
There is a bus stop across the road.
4. সমস্ত জায়গা জুড়ে
His family was shattered across the country.
A happy smile spread across her face.
5. হঠাৎ করে/অপ্রত্যাশিত ভাবে কোন কিছু পাওয়া বা কারো সাথে দেখা হওয়া
বোঝাতে
I came across my old friend.
After (পরে )
1. সময়
He came here after lunch.
He is leaving the school after 20 years as headmaster.
2. বিরতিহীন ভাবে
They work day after day.
They entered the room one after another.
3. ক্রমানুসারে
B comes after A in alphabetical order.
Khokon is my best friend after you.
4. সন্ধানে/পিছনে ছোটা
The police ran after the thief.
We run after money.
5. অনুকরণে/আদলে
The boy is named after his father.
6. সত্ত্বেও
After all his efforts, he could not shine in life.
Against ( বিরুদ্ধে)
1. বিরুদ্ধে
He is against us.
I am against death penalty.
2. বিপরীত/প্রতিকূল
He is swimming against the current.
She took her children away against her husband’s wishes.
3. মিশে/হেলান দিয়ে
He leaned against the wall.
He put the bag against the wall.
4. তুলনা/বিপরীত/মধ্যে
Eighty students passed against ninety.
5. প্রতিরোধ
This is an effective injection against jaundice.
At ( এ/য়/তে)
1. ছোট স্থানের আগে
He lives at Malibagh.
There is a telephone box at the crossroad.
2. স্কুল, কলেজ, মসজিদ, মন্দিরের আগে
He is at Dhaka college.
They are at office.
3. কোন কিছুর পাশেই
He is waiting at the door.
They were at the enquiry desk.
4. দিকে
He gazed at the sky.
Look at the blackboard.
5. অবস্থা
They are at work.
Time ….
They leave at 10 o’ clock.
You can see the stars at night.
He retired at sixty.

Before (পূর্বে,/আগে, সম্মুখে)
He left before breakfast.
She sat down before me.
They play was performed before audience.
Behind ( পিছনে/আড়ালে)
The park is behind my house.
I don’t know what is behind his anger.
Beside ( পাশে )
She sat beside me.
The road is beside the river.
By ( দ্বারা/দিয়ে/কর্তৃক)
I like to travel by train.
Hamlet is written by Shakespear.
For (জন্য )
They fought for the country.
He is waiting for me.
From ( হতে/থেকে/চেয়ে)
He is going from Dhaka to Rajshahi.
He works from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In ( মধ্যে- এ/য়/তে-স্থিতিশীল অর্থে)
He lives in Dhaka.
The lion is in the case.
Into ( মধ্যে- এ/য়/তে-গতিশীলতা বোঝাতে)
He came into my office.
Translate the passage into English.
Cut the cake into pieces.
Our country is divided into eight divisions.
Of (র/এর/গণের)
The shirt of his brother is red.
The gold of his ring is pure.
Off (বিচ্ছিন্ন/আলাদা)
He fell off his bicycle.
My mother is off duty now.
On (উপরে)
The book is on the table.
I put my hand on his shoulder.
Over ( উপরে/বেশি)
He held an umbrella over his head.
There is a bridge over the river.
To (দিকে/প্রতি)
He is going to college.
I gave a book to him.
Under (নিচে)
The cat is under the table.
A fair little girl sat under the tree.
With (দিয়ে/সহ)
I live with my parents.
He likes tea with sugar.
Without (ছাড়া/ব্যতীত )
He left the country without a passport.
The old man cannot see without his glass.
Differences between some prepositions
1. Between – Among
সাধারণত দুইয়ের মধ্যে বোঝাতে between এবং দুই এর অধিকের মধ্যে বোঝাতে among
ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন-
Katabon is between Shahabag and Science Lab.
He divided his property among his sons.
2. By – In – On
ভ্রমণের মাধ্যমের সাথে by-in-on ব্যবহৃত হয়। তবে এদের মধ্যে পার্থক্য আছে।
পরিবহনের নামের আগে Article/adjective না থাকলে by বসে, in বসে না। যেমন-
-by car. –by bus. – by train. – by boat.
পরিবহনের নামের আগে Article/adjective থাকলে in বসে, by বসে না। যেমন-
In the car. In a small boat.
Cycle, bicycle, foot, horseback সাথে on বসে, in বসে না। যেমন-
On cycle. On foot. On horseback.
3. By – With
Agent/Doer অর্থাৎ যে বা যা কোন কিছু করে (যেমন- কোন ব্যক্তি, দেশ,
প্রতিষ্ঠান, সংস্থা, যান্ত্রিক কৌশল, প্রাকৃতিক বিষয় ইত্যাদি) তার আগে by
বসে, with বসে না। যেমন-
The town was flooded by heavy rain.
The snake was killed by him.
কোন কাজ করার জন্য যে যন্ত্র (Instrument) ব্যবহার করা হয় ওই যন্ত্রের আগে
with বসে, by বসে না। যেমন-
The snake was killed with a stick.
She chopped the onion with a knife.
4. For – Since
Present perfect, Present perfect continuous, Past perfect এবং Past perfect
continuous tense- G for বা since বসে। এদের মধ্যে a period of time ( অর্থাৎ
১ ঘন্টা, ২ দিন, ৩ মাস, ৫ বছর, ১০ মিনিট) বোঝালে তার আগে For
(জন্য/ধরিয়া/ধরে/ব্যাপিয়া) বসে, আর point of time ( অর্থাৎ সকাল হতে,
সোমবার হতে, ১০ টা হতে, ১৯৯৫ সাল হতে) বোঝালে তার আগে Since (হতে/থেকে)
ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
He has lived in Dhaka for five years.
He has been here since 10 a.m.
5. From – Since
Since এবং from উভয়ই point of time এ ব্যবহৃত হয়। তবে অতীতের কাজ-অর্থাৎ এখন
(বর্তমান) থেকে পূর্বের/আগের কাজ বোঝাতে since/from বসে। এখনকার/ভবিষ্যতের
কাজ বোঝাতে since না বসে, from বসে। যেমন-
He has started rowing since/from Sunday.
He starts rowing from today.
He will start rowing from tomorrow.
6. At – In
ছোট স্থানের নামের আগে at বড় স্থানের নামের আগে in বসে। যেমন-
He lives at Jatrabari.
He lives in Dhaka.
7. In – On
দিন এবং তারিখের আগে on বসে, কিন্তু মাস, ঋতু, বছর, শতাব্দি, দশক ইত্যাদি
বোঝাতে in বসে। যেমন-
On Sunday, On the 15th March, In 1971, In January, In spring.
8. In – Into
স্থির অবস্থা বোঝাতে in ব্যবহৃত হয়, আর গতিশীল অবস্থা/অবস্থার রূপান্তর
বোঝাতে into বসে। যেমন-
He is in his bed room.
He came into my room.
Water changes into vapor.
9. To – Till
দূরত্ব বোঝাতে to আর সময় বোঝাতে till/until বসে। যেমন-
He walked to the mosque.
He walked till 6 p.m.
10. For – At
কোন কিছুর দাম বোঝাতে for/at ব্যবহৃত হয়। নির্দিষ্ট দাম (অর্থাৎ- কত টাকা)
উল্লেখ থাকলে for বসে, আর নির্দিষ্ট দাম উল্লেখ না থাকলে at বসে। যেমন-
He bought the shirt for 500 taka.
He bought the shirt at a high price.
11. Above – Over
কোন কিছুর এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাস পর্যন্ত বোঝাতে over ব্যবহৃত হয়।
He jumped over the wall.
There is a bridge over the river.
কোন কিছু ঢেকে দেয়া/আবৃত করা বোঝাতে over ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
She spread a carpet over the floor.
একটা জিনিস অন্য জিনিসের সরাসরি/খাড়া খাড়ি উপরে না হলে above বসে। যেমন-
His house is above the town.
12. During – For
কোন কাজ কখন ঘটে তা বোঝাতে during ব্যবহৃত হয়। আর কোন কাজ কত সময় ধরে ঘটে
তা বোঝাতে for ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
I felt asleep during the film.
I watched television for four hours last night.
13. Due to – Owing to
Be verb এরপর due to বসলেও owing to বসে না। যেমন-
His success was due to his hard labour.
The match was cancelled due to/owing to the bad weather.
14. Beside – besides
Beside- পাশে, Besides- ছাড়াও/ব্যতীত/আরো
She sat beside me.
Besides food, I need shelter.
15. In time – on time
ঠিক সময়ে অর্থাৎ নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের আগেও না পরেও না এরকম বোঝাতে on time
ব্যবহৃত হয়, আর ঠিক সময়ের আগেই বোঝাতে in time ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
We went to start the meeting exactly on time.
The man would have died if we had not hospitalized him in time.
16. In the end – At the end
সময়ের দিক থেকে শেষে বোঝাতে in the end ব্যবহৃত হয়, আর অবস্থানের দিক থেকে
শেষে বোঝাতে at the end ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন-
There is a pause at the end of the sentence.
It has been illustrated at the end of the book.
